UV Window Film

UV Window Film reduces damaging UV rays and other causes of fading (visible light and solar heat) to help protect you and your valuables.

Sunlight and UV Damage

Exposure to Ultra-Violet rays from sunlight contributes to fading and can cause irreparable damage to your merchandise, furnishings, precious artefacts, and even skin.

Two types of UV radiation, UVA and UVB are especially damaging to your skin;

  • UVA is associated with wrinkling of the skin and other effects of photo-aging
  • UVB is the main cause of sunburn

Effects of direct sunlight on Skin

During summer when we go out outside we protect ourselves with clothing, sunglasses, hats and sunscreen – we know the damage the sun can cause our skin.

However, we are not only exposed to sunlight when we venture outside – glazing in windows and doors allow the suns rays to reach us while we are indoors too.

Ultraviolet radiation is present in sunlight all year round – and reaches us even when it is cloudy.

UV Rays have many negative effects on our skin, they;

  • Cause 90% of all premature skin aging and wrinkles
  • Destroy Vitamin A in the skin, which contributes to cell damage
  • Damage collagen, the structural protein that keeps skin cells firm, causing wrinkles and sagging.
  • Are increasingly being linked to skin cancer

Type of UV radiation Effects
UVA Skin aging, eye damage, linked to skin cancer
UVB Sunburn, premature skin aging, eye damage, linked to skin cancer
UVC Most destructive but mostly stopped by the ozone layer

UV Window Film for Photosensitive conditions

Worldwide, there are millions of people who suffer from sensitivity to Ultra-Violet light to some degree. For many of these sufferers and their families, life has to be lived away from sunlight.

UV Window Film offers added protection for people who suffer from the following photosensitivity conditions;

  • Actinic Pruirgo
  • Bloom Syndrome
  • Dermatomyostis
  • Discoid Lupus Erythematosus
  • Dubowitz Syndrome
  • Erythropoietic Protoporphyria
  • Ichthyosis (Trischothiodystrophy)
  • Photosensitive Erythemea Multiforme
  • Polymorphous Light Euption
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
  • Three M Syndrome

UV Window Film is often prescribed for people who cannot tolerate sunlight, and is recommended by the both the British Skin Foundation and the Skin Cancer Foundation to protect healthy skin.

Dermagard Window Film

Dermagard window film was the market leading UV window film in the 90s, and 00s, offering basic UV protection up to 380nm. Although now quite an aged technology, it is still regularly prescribed for people with photosensitive conditions.

Today however there are a range of UV window films on the market, and the type of product most suited to your condition will depend entirely on what wavelengths you are most sensitive to.

ARC UVTA

ARC UVTA
is an amber coloured film designed to offer protection up to 550nm – therefore filtering out UV and the blue section of visible light. It is available in two grades, depending on the level of protection you wish to receive.

ARC UVTA

ARC UVTA is ideal if you suffer from a skin condition which cannot be addressed by standard UV Window Films, such as EPP. (This is because standard UV Window Films stop working, before sensitivity starts in conditions such as EPP.)

Choosing the right protection

In order to get the best possible protection, you should always:

Speak to your doctor to find out exactly which wavelengths you are most sensitive to.

Speak to one of our UV specialists for advice on which products offer the best protection at these wavelengths.

Colour Typical Protection

(Up to)

Solar Film Reflective / Tinted 380nm
Dermagard Clear 380nm
UVCL Clear 380nm
UVCL Plus Clear 400nm
ARC UVTA Amber 550nm

Although all UV window films will offer protection to 380nm the day they are installed, some of the older design products are not very durable and therefore rapidly lose their protective properties. This can take as little as two years in some cases.

ARC UVCL Plus is multi layered clear UV film designed to offer UV protection for 2-3 times longer than the basic construction products, so offers the longest protection available for those sensitive to 400nm or below.

ARC UVTA continues to offer protection above 400nm, also offering protection against the early parts of visible light (namely the blue light).
