Reduce Fading with Anti Fade Window Film

Anti Fade Window Film can help reduce fading in carpets, floors, furniture, displays and other belongings by filtering out large amounts of the main causes of fading.

Extended exposure to sunlight can have negative effects on carpets, upholstery and your personal belongings. Colours can become faded and dull, furniture and wood finishes can become damaged, and often the damage is too extensive to repair.

Fading is particularly a threat in retail establishments – where the need to keep contents in displays looking new and fresh is vital.

What causes fading?

Causes of FadingFading is caused by a number of factors, such as;

  1. Ultraviolet Radiation (40%)
  2. Visible Light (25%)
  3. Heat (25%)
  4. Other (10%)
  • Chemical Vapors
  • Age of the Fabric
  • Dye Fastness
  • Wear and tear physically removing colouring agents from the materials surface.

Anti Fade / Museum Window Films

Anti Fade Window Film is frequently used in museums and listed buildings to protect precious artwork and artefacts. By filtering out large amounts of the main causes of fading such as UV, Visible Light, and Heat, fading can be dramatically reduced.

There are various types of Anti Fade Window Film to help reduce fading:

Increased Protection Against:

Film Type:

Visible Light

Solar Window Film Y2 Y Y
Spectrally Selective Window Film Y2 Y
UV Specialist Window  Film Y3

1: contribution to fading, 2: to 380nm, 3: to 400nm

Solar Window Films

These window films offer the greatest protection against fading; however Visible Light (and potentially the view through the window in one direction) is sacrificed. They are most popular when two-way viewing through the window is not required.

Spectrally Selective Window Films

These retain large amounts of visible light, yet filter out the other main causes of fading, and are therefore the most popular choice in protecting against fading. Spectrally Selective window films are used in most retail establishments when a clear view through the window needs to be maintained.

Specialist UV Protection Window Films

These filter out an increased amount of UV radiation (up to 400nm) and therefore offer the greatest protection against the largest contributor to fading. However, they do not protect against visible light or excessive heat, and therefore may offer less fade protection than solar or spectrally selective window films. Where fading is concerned, UV Specialist Window films are used as a lesser expensive alternative to spectrally selective window films.
